YAKIMA - LaDonna (Bjerke) Hoon was born in Mayville, North Dakota on October 12, 1931. She was the second of seven children of Norwegian parents, Florence and Dave Bjerke. The family moved to Richmond, California where her dad worked briefly in a shipyard. The bulk of her youth was spent in Durham, California, living on a ranch. LaDonna had an adventuresome spirit and together with her good friend Cathryn Means struck out on their own the day after graduating from Durham High School in 1948. LaDonna worked briefly as a secretary in San Francisco and then moved to Seattle. It was while living in Seattle that LaDonna met and married Phil Hoon after a brief, intense courtship. The couple was married 58 years.
Their daughter Teresa was born in 1951. In 1952 LaDonna and Phil began another adventure by moving to Fairbanks, Alaska. LaDonna devoted her time to raising her four children. Gary was born in 1954, Guy in 1955 and Christopher in 1961.
In 1963 the family relocated to Toppenish, Washington. Phil had family roots in the Yakima Valley and pursued a career in newspaper printing, photography, journalism and editing. The couple also bought a small fruit ranch in 1964. LaDonna was hired by the Yakima Herald-Republic where she was employed for 15 years in the Circulation Department. Additionally during this time LaDonna, Phil and family developed a 80 acre fruit ranch in Buena Heights. The couple lived and worked on the ranch for 40 years.
During her adult years LaDonna continued to exhibit her spirit and interest in the greater world by traveling. She was fortunate in visiting Europe twice and the Holy Land. She and Phil enjoyed a cruise to the Mexican Riveria and LaDonna took several other cruises with friends. LaDonna traveled to Maui, Hawaii four times to visit her daughter (and enjoy the weather!). LaDonna and Phil owned a travel trailer and together visited many beautiful northwest locations.
LaDonna loved the fruits and vegetables of the Yakima Valley. While living on the ranch she canned, froze, pickled and dehydrated produce every summer. She was an expert pie baker from experience gained during her youth when she was responsible for baking pies for the threshing crews' mid-day meal. LaDonna loved baking and preparing lefse, sandbukles, fatigmand and other traditional Norwegian pastries.
LaDonna was a voracious reader which she pursued in earnest after her retirement. She owned an extensive library of classics, current fiction and historical novels. LaDonna belonged to local book clubs and enjoyed thoughtful discussion. She was a lifetime member of Lutheran and Methodist churches, including 40 years at Toppenish United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband and four children LaDonna is survived by her sisters Ruth Henderson and Sharrie Wilson of Durham, California; brothers Vern of Merced, CA and Dave, Jr. of Illinois. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother. LaDonna's grandchildren include Sarah Bennett and Bob Story, both of Portland, Oregon and Curtis Hoon, Alison Hoon and Brad Story of Yakima. She was the proud great-grandmother of Hannah, Jackson, Taylor and Jonny. She had numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and cherished friends around the world. She shared her humor and warmth with everyone and will be greatly missed. We wish her well on her new adventures.
A memorial service to celebrate LaDonna's life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Valley Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Zillah at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that you make donations to Memorial Home Health Care & Hospice, 1019 S. 40th, Yakima, WA 98908, in memory of LaDonna Hoon. YAKIMA - Raul R. Lopez, 48, of Zillah passed away on Friday, November 7, 2008 in Yakima.
Raul, a husband, father, brother, son, and friend to many. He arrived in the late seventies to live the American dream for his daughter Rosa and his future children. Raul worked in the agricultural field, but then began his own business first selling tamales then, buying and selling furniture right out of his home. He was a loving, friendly, humorous, outgoing, and humble person. He touched so many lives in the course of his short life and especially that of his immediate family. They learned that family comes first and that no matter what family must stick together at all times. Motto: "Beat each other up, but make up later." He was a great provider for his family and instilled an egalitarian model of relationship to his children. He was very loving towards his wife Maria, or as he called her with love "Chela", or "Mi Gaviotita". He was the type of man who brought flowers on any day of the week to the love of his life, Chela. He was also a very extravagant person he loved to celebrate special occasions with his family, friends, and neighbors. His smile was one that brightened up any room on any day. He was the most humorous person who turned your blue mood into sweet kumquats. When it came time to dance he was the first on the dance floor showing his best moves in his glamorous snazzy suit and scent of his best cologne. The moment was almost that of tradition for any party because that's when everyone knew it was time to have fun. He was also a great Samaritan he aided many neighbors in cold Winter days by clearing driveways, stopped on the road to help people get to a safe spot, he opened the doors to his home to many family and friends. He was to many a father or friend who was very wise and experienced in life, and offered you the best advice. He loved to go to yard sales, beaches, casinos, and shopping for cars for the collection of almost 200 plus cars he collected over the years. The beach was his favorite spot when visiting his family in Oregon. He loved swimming and began to pick it up again this year to prepare for his new prosthetic leg. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren Ivan, Valeriano, and Eviana. They as many times he described energized him, and although he could not walk for sometime with them, he gave them many wheelchair rides. The children loved the adventures with grandpa on that fun wheelchair. As for his children Rosa, Nansi, and Rigo they love him to no end. He was a man of example and they have always wanted to follow in his footsteps. He loved his children and provided them with everything they wanted plus more. They are eternally grateful for having such an extraordinary father. He will be in our hearts and thoughts forever and ever.
In honor of Raul's wishes please DO NOT wear black to any event regarding his funeral. He wanted everybody to rejoice his journey to our Lord Jesus Christ. The family would like to thank the Memorial Hospital staff and Davita Dialysis Center that cared for him during the last years of his life. Especially when it was extremely difficult on many occasions for the family. Thanks to the many close family and friends who were with him and never forgot the person he was and still was after his sickness overcame his power and will to control.
Raul is survived by his wife; Maria Lopez of Zillah, son; Rigoberto Lopez of Portland, OR, daughters; Rosa Elena Lopez of Zillah, Nansi Lopez of Portland, OR, brothers; Jesus Lopez of Idaho, Arturo Lopez of Mexico, Samuel Lopez of Medford, OR, and Arnulfo Lopez of Minnesota, sisters; Maria Lopez and Gloria Lopez of Oregon, Carolina Lopez of Idaho, and three grandchildren.
The funeral mass for Raul will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Church of the Resurrection located at 704 Schooley Road in Zillah at 2:00 p.m. Immediately following mass there will be a dinner for family and friends at the Zillah Civic Center. The family has entrusted Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah with arrangements. You may also send condolences to the Lopez family at www.valleyhillsfh.com.
