YAKIMA - Betty Alvord died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home just 3 weeks shy of her 88th birthday. She was born May 7, 1922 in Boone Co., MO to Luther and Nellie Proctor Armstrong. She graduated from high school in Columbia, MO in 1941 then attended and graduated from Business College there. She then worked for Farm Security in several counties in northern Missouri. After the end of the war she moved to Boulder, CO. She married Leland Stuart Alvord in Boulder on April 16, 1948. While he was finishing his degree at the University of Colorado, she worked as a secretary earning her PHT (Putting Hubby Through) Degree. In 1950 they moved to Nebraska, later moving to Selah, WA in 1953.
She loved to garden and always had a large garden of both flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed flowers and loved to make arrangements that she displayed in her home. She also loved to sew and enjoyed making her own clothes. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she volunteered in various capacities as long as she was able. She was an avid reader and loved to discuss issues and ideas.
Her husband Stuart preceded her in death in Aug. 2006. After her husband's death she made her home with her daughter in Selah. She missed her husband dearly and was lonely without him. However, she remained active as long as she could, going on several vacations and weekly shopping and lunch trips with her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter Lynne of Selah and two sisters, Frances Corcoran of Georgetown, KY and Dorothy Armstrong of Columbia, MO, and one brother, Jim Armstrong of Columbia, MO.
She will be greatly missed.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, April 14 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima. Burial will be at 12:00 noon on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, and funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Yakima, Washington. Words of condolence seem ineffectual in the face of the recent loss of your mother. However, I do want you to know that you have my deepest sympathy.
